Using sub-sequences

Sub-sequences help you create flexible, organized pathways within a single sequence, offering multiple user experience flows under one sequence subscription.

    • Simplifies sequence organization and visualization within Kartra.

    • Provides subscription management under a single name for your contacts.

    • Use separate sequences and automation rules for more distinct pathways.


How-to create a sub-sequence

  1. In Kartra, go to Marketing > Sequences.

  2. Open your main sequence.

  3. Click + Add to add a sub-sequence from the top toolbar.

  4. Add steps to the sub-sequence and configure them as usual.

    • Note: No starting rule is required.

    • Sub-sequence steps are labeled with a letter before the step number (e.g., "A1," "A2" for sub-sequence "A"). Each sub-sequence is assigned a unique letter, making it easy to identify and connect pathways between flows.

  5. Define how leads finish the sub-sequence:

    • Use a Complete step to fully stop people at the end of the sub-sequence.

    • Use a Go To step to return leads to the main sequence.

  6. Return to the main sequence and create a pathway into the sub-sequence:

    • Example: Add a Go To step triggered by a condition (e.g., lead reaches this step or meets certain criteria).


Examples: Cart abandonment email

Use a sub-sequence (the images above illustrate this example)

  1. Main sequence: Send a cart abandonment email to prompt re-engagement.

  2. After two days, split leads:

    • If clicked a link: Use a Go To step to move leads into a sub-sequence for further engagement emails.

    • If no click: Use a Complete step to stop the flow.

Alternative methods

  • Extend the main sequence along split paths:

    • Instead of a sub-sequence, add more steps directly to the whichever side of the split you want to continue engaging with. This is ideal for simpler flows.

  • Separate sequences with automation rules:

    1. Create two sequences (e.g., one for general abandonment and another for engaged abandonment).

    2. Under Marketing > Automations, create a rule:

      1. If lead clicks a link, unsubscribe them from the general sequence and subscribe them to the engaged sequence.
