Offering discounts is an easy way to attract new customers and keep your loyal ones coming back. Coupons create excitement and urgency—think "limited-time offer" or "first 10 customers save big!" They're perfect for promoting new products, clearing inventory, or rewarding your best customers.
In this video, I guide you through the process of creating a coupon for discounts on products. I demonstrate how to set up a coupon code, choose the discount type (percentage or full amount), select the product to apply the discount to, set the price point, and configure payment options.
I also explain how to specify coupon expiration dates and determine who can use the coupon. By following these steps, you can effectively create and share coupons to offer discounts to customers.
Key facts about coupons
- Coupons are tied to price points:
- A coupon is created for a specific price point, not a product.
- If a product has multiple price points, you’ll need a separate coupon for each.
- Coupon code requirements:
- Codes can include letters, numbers, and some special characters.
- Limit: 50 characters (no spaces).
- Codes are not case-sensitive.
- Discount limits:
- The first payment cannot go below $0.00.
- Recurring payments (rebills) must be at least $1.00.

Pro tips
Expiration date and "cart closing" time:
Expiration dates use your account's time zone and end at 23:59:59 on the specified day.
PayPal limitations:
PayPal applies the same discount to all payments and doesn’t support varying discounts (e.g., "first payment only").
If you need to restrict a discount to specific payments (e.g., first payment or first few payments), disable PayPal as a payment processor for that product and choose another service.
Test your coupon setup:
After creating a coupon:
- Go to the checkout page for the product and price point associated with your coupon.
- Look for the coupon code field on the pricing screen.
- Enter the code, apply it, and confirm the discount works as expected.
