Thank a loyal customer or prevent a cancellation by offering them a special deal.
You can do this in one of two ways, depending on your goals:
- Apply a coupon:
- Best when you want to offer a temporary or promotional discount that appears clearly on the customer’s invoice.
- Ideal for retention offers, limited-time deals, or when an existing subscriber asks for a current promotion to be applied to their plan.
- Edit the subscription pricing directly:
- Best when you want to permanently change what the subscriber pays or adjust their plan without requiring them to repurchase.
- Often used for long-term loyalty pricing, or to update the plan’s cost when a customer upgrades or downgrades.
Both options update what the customer pays moving forward, without interrupting their active subscription.
- Changes to a subscription take effect starting with the next billing cycle.
- If the subscription is currently in the grace period (payment failure and retry cycle), changes will only apply to the next successful payment.
- To apply a change across the entire subscription, make sure it’s outside the grace period.
- Subscriptions processed through PayPal cannot be modified.
Option 1: Apply a coupon to an active subscription
Coupons let you apply a discount to a limited number of upcoming payments or to all future rebills. They’re displayed as applied discounts on customer invoices.
To apply a coupon:
- Go to Sales > Payments > Subscriptions and locate the customer’s subscription.
- Click the Subscription ID to open the Subscription details window.
- Edit the Active coupon section of the subscription. (You don’t need a pre-existing coupon for this.)
- Choose the discount type: percentage or fixed amount. (1)
- Enter the discount value. (2)
- Select whether to apply the discount to all future payments or to a specific number of upcoming payments. (3)
- If you choose a limited number, enter how many payments it should apply to. (4)
- Apply the coupon.
Option 2: Edit the subscription pricing directly
Editing a subscription’s pricing permanently changes what the customer pays. You can update it again later if needed, but it won’t automatically revert to the previous price.
Invoices will simply reflect the new price, without any label or explanation indicating a discount.
If you use this option to increase pricing, local laws may require you to inform your customers prior to bringing changes to their subscriptions. Make sure to stay informed about applicable regulations.
To modify a subscription's pricing:
- Go to Sales > Payments > Subscriptions and locate the customer’s subscription.
- Click the Subscription ID to open the Subscription details window.
- Edit the Subscription pricing section.
- Modify any of the available fields: price, quantity, recurrence, or tax percentage.
- Apply your changes.
